Description

Why Boston does it: It makes their team better for 2 seasons, I think Louie is the better player at this point in their careers. Former 30 goal scorer in Boston and was clearly a better fit on the Bruins than he is here in Van. They also get a B level prospect who makes up for the extra year in addition to getting the better player.

Why the Canucks do it: They lose one year of Salary at 6M. Yes taking on Backes is a bit of a risk even to free up that money in two seasons. He could very well get waived here as well in favour of Schaller, Macewen, Bailey or Motte. Louie probably doesnt get waived fitting well on that second line or the 4th line. But we have the depth to overcome losing the trade in the short term, it then pays off big time freeing up space for Petey and Hughes.

The entire idea of moving Backes is to get his contract off the books and create cap space. Not take on a worse/longer one and create none.
