With the cap set to explode to over 90M after the new USA TV Deal and the entrance of Seattle into the league it really helps the Canucks this offseason.
Looking at this teams prospects depth is impressive and is going to really help this team going forward. With these big contracts being signed the Canucks will be able to supplement them with cheap young talent for years. Trading Demko for a 1st will help this even further, which I could see happening before the Seattle Expansion draft.
My protected list: 7F, 3D, 1G
Petey, Miller, Boeser, Horvat, Virtanen, Gaudette are locks, 7th Guy will be whichever prospect takes the biggest step Bailey, Lind or MacEwen probably. Ferland could be a wildcard.
Tanev, Myers and same situation for the 3rd spot between Tryamkin, Rafferty and Juolevi. Whoever takes the biggest step over the next year gets protected. Rafferty makes the most sense at this point, only ready RHD and has had the best year to date.
Hughes and Edler dont need protection, Edler is a ufa and Hughes didnt play enough games when he burned a year of his elc to make him eligible with 3 required seasons.
Goalie Markstrom obvs
Seattle takes one of: Ferland, Dipietro, Macewen, Lind, Juolevi, Rafferty, Tryamkin or Bailey.
Buying out Eriksson is a good option to save 2M on the cap for this year. He becomes a good candidate for this especially since the penalty the following year is only 1M. Giving us 6M in dead cap coming off the book in 22-23 along with Beagle and Roussel which gives us 30M+ of space to resign Boeser 8, Gaudette 5, Virtanen 5, Tryamkin 4, Lind 2 and Dipietro 1.(=25) We replace Beagle and Rouss with entry level guys or resign them to cheap 1M type deals.
You realize the cap is tied to league profit right? and they are going to have nearly a billion dollar revenue increase with Seattles 500M expansion fee and the new tv deal which is going to increase by 200% or more from its current 200M per season which was signed 10 years ago.
The cap could go up 10M let alone 6 or 7. Ive read that it will be close to a 1M increase per 100M in revenue. Even if the cap jumps by only 5M the Canucks are still fine.
