Description
Leafs are probably stuck with the full cap hit of Marleau if he wants to play next year. If he wants to retire then his cap can be traded to Arizona along with an expensive sweetener. If by chance San Jose wants Marleau at a reduced cap hit there is a way. Leafs trade Marleau to Arizona, then Arizona trades Marleau to San Jose with a 50% retention. Just cost Arizona 750,000 in cash plus 3.13 in cap space. San Jose as the same money cost and same cap. I don' think San Jose would even want Marleau at 3.13 cap hit but if they did, Marleau might accept the trade.

Détails additionnels:
Leafs add a 2020 first rounder to Arizona. Arizona trades Marleau to San Jose with 50% retention San Jose and Arizona both pay Marleau 750,00 and have his cap hit 3.313m. This the assumption that Marleau wants to continue to play, San Jose wants him and his cap hit and of course Marleau waives his NMC.

SJ isn't taking back Marleau, even at 50% retained. They have a lot of pending FAs, including Pavelski, Thornton, Meier, Karlsson, and Labanc. If they acquire Marleau, then they'd likely be losing a better player to FA.

The long and short of it is, the Leafs signed Marleau to a bad contract (in terms in term), not to mention it was a 35+ deal. Teams aren't exactly going to be lining up to help out the Leafs, unless you pay a higher premium than just a late 1st.

Arizona accepted Datsyk's cap hit of 7m for about the same offer as I proposed. Yes, I agree with San Jose probably wouldn't want Marleau, but if they did, this is the only way.

Datsyuk was serving a purpose of getting them above the cap floor. Arizona isn't keeping his entire hit. So unless you're trading him to the Coyotes, which I doubt he'll waive his NMC/NTC for, I don't see why SJ would want him back.

This is a continued urban legend about Arizona's cap floor. What they have is space between cap floor 60m and 83m maxnext year. So they have space and it certainly would be worth a 1st rounder to them. Obviously Marleau would only agree to the trade, if the second trade to San Jose was in place. I agree with you that San Jose probably doesn't want Marleau and his 3.13 cap hit. I just see so many trades about Marleau to San Jose, which to me are not realistic. This reduced cap to San Jose is "less unrealistic"

Arizona wants players with high cap hits, and low actual salaries. So, unless Toronto pays the $3M bonus, which I'm sure they'd do, then it might happen. But even then, 3.13M for Marleau at 40 years old doesn't sound great for SJ.
